This is today's question.
- Were you affected by the Vietnam War?
- By that I mean, was anyone in your family active in the war?
- If so, how did their being active impact you personally?
- What Branch of the service were they or you in?
- If it was a relative have they talked about it with their family?
- Did they tell any stories to you about it?
We may all have someone close to us that served in this war since it was fought between 1954 and 1975. So there are lots of questions that can be asked about this war. For me, my oldest brother was in the Marines during this war and served in Vietnam. All I can think is that it must have been very bad for these guys because he didn't talk about it for a very long time. He's only relayed one story about it and that one was just heartbreaking. I would like to add it to my page about him so I may see if he will talk about it again so that I can get down all of the facts of the story and not just what I remember being told. But it involved a tank, a bomb and losing one of the guys in the tank as best I can remember. I'll need to see if he will tell me more about it. For as to how it affected me personally, I was about 6 or 7 when my brother served in this war, the only memory I have is of seeing him in his dress blues and thinking how distinguished he looked. I remember that I got to use his bedroom while he was away because up until then there wasn't space for me to have a bedroom. I also remember that he must have been somewhere in France on leave during his service because he had been sent a copy of my first grade photo and had it enlarged and framed in a pretty silver frame and sent back to my parents from there. These are about the only memories I have personally of this time.
