This is today's question.
- As a child did you have any family traditions?
- Were they related to a holiday?
- Was it something special for someone's birthday?
- Or was it just a special tradition not attached to another event?
I don't remember having any special traditions in our family really. I'm sure they must have had some before I was old enough to remember them though. In writing some of these questions I'm figuring out the things I missed out on as a child when my mother passed away at such an early age. Mothers are the glue for the family and while my father did a wonderful job with us kids there are things that would have been more important to my mother that we missed out on.
As a continuation of yesterday's blog post... Here are the two excerpts from The Lily Wallace new American Cookbook on Ration Cooking from 1946.
Making use of left overs cont.
Cake and cookies - If stale, use in puddings or Brown Betties. Combine with bread for a tastier bread pudding. Serve with soft custard sauce as a pleasing dessert. Keep fresh longer by putting into cake keeper with a pared and cut fresh apple.
Cereals - Add seasoning and egg and fry as croquettes. Use as filler for meat loaf, mixed with chopped meat as stuffing for green peppers or cabbage rolls.
Cheese - Even if cheese is hard, it can be chopped or grated and sprinkled over salads or soups. It can be grated and placed on top of casserole dishes. It can be added to cream sauces for extra zip. It can be grated and mixed with relish and mayonnaise as a sandwich spread.
